Progress

Back to my question: After the e-luminate session last week, I thought about some of the feedback I received. Things were getting a little muddy. My question seemed to be answering itself; I wanted to put something about CHAMPS in my question. I did get some responses to my blog - these helped me to clarify the issue. I decided to speak with my principal about my action research project. With the CHAMPS book in hand I went to my principal's office. We talked and it seems administration feels there is a great need for this type of training and not just for new educators! I was invited to the next team leader meeting.

I am thinking strongly that my questions will be open ended. I will prepare some to field test among a few teachers at school. For example:
  1. As a new educator, in which areas did you feel you needed the most support? ______________________________________________________
  2. As an educator with 2, 3, or 4 years of experience, which areas do you feel you would like training in? ______________________________________________
  3. Most often new educators need additional training in classroom management. Do you agree? yes/no Please explain _________________________________
For the instructional coaches, support staff and administrators, the questions would be revised slightly:
  1. As an instructional coach/administrator, in which areas did you feel you need additional information for supporting new educators? ______________________________________________________
  2. Thinking back to your own experience as a new educator, in which areas do you feel you needed training? ______________________________________________
  3. Most often new educators need additional training in classroom management. Regarding your own experience as a coach/administrator of new educators, do you agree? yes/no Please explain _________________________________
Also I am thinking I need to explore the teachers' willingness to attend a training for this issue.
  1. With some of the challenging behaviors we are seeing in the classroom, do you feel you could use additional strategies in behavior management? yes/no
  2. Would you be willing to attend a training to address this issue? yes/no
Are these questions clear?
Are my questions phrased in such a way that they invite free response?
Is there a better way to word these questions?
Will these questions help me get the information and data I need to proceed on my action research project?
Thank you for your input.

Good luck at your team leader meeting.
Here is some information that may be helpful to you.
Amalio Nieves is the director of the Office of Prevention.
If you can guarantee 25 participants, you should be able to host the training at your school.

"I wanted to put something about CHAMPS in my question."

After reading your blog and listening to your recorded session is appears that your inquiry is directed to the impact of CHAMPs on New Educator development.

Try not to direct your study of how effective CHAMPs (content) is with your new educator but on how support of CHAMPs is related to NE development. You have a great influence on how support is provided.

Your survey questions are on target for background knowledge and I am curious to see the connections once your repost your current AR question.

Marie, I’m posing lots of questions for you to think about.

I’m focusing on: What is your AR question? Which survey questions will give you the answers you want?

Is your AR question on finding out which area of need is greatest for New Educators or for the entire staff? Will this determine the direction of a setting up a classroom management training at your site? Once, you find out, what happens next?

Is your AR question on finding out how to identify ways to support coaches so they increase their coaching roles to effectively increase classroom management?

Is your question on finding out the site-based Induction plan at your site for increasing the effective classroom management?

If your principal is deciding to offer classroom management, will it be:
Mandatory for all teachers?
Based on need? Who determines that need?
Voluntary?
For a specific group, e.g all New Educators?

Are you asking questions about the willingness to attend the training to determine how many might attend? or who will be considered coaches? Or ?

Or you asking questions about needing additional training in classroom management to find out how many may need it for the future training? For …?

If the principal says there is a great need for this type of training, is it from observing classes of her current staff? If yes, then the experienced teachers show a need for increasing effective classroom management since you have no New Educators now. Does it mean that the experienced teachers who are or will be coaches and models need to increase their knowledge and skills on classroom management, practice their new learning, and, most important, also be provided support and coaching on how to coach effective classroom management? If yes, what in your school plan will there be for support and coaching for these teachers while changing their practice, prior to and during the time they are coaching others? How will their needs to increase their coaching skills be identified? What will the support and coaching look like?

Beyond training (e.g. CHAMPs), how have coaches coached and supported increasing effective classroom management? Which strategies worked or did not work? How do teachers want support to their learning? If you want to include coaching and support in your study, would you then be able to identify a plan of strategies to increase the coaching skills of the coaches?

If you ask which area is in greatest need, then will you need to focus on both the classroom management and whatever area is identified from the survey?

If you have had a conversation with the principal and know that increasing classroom management skills is the direction that she plans for next year, would you be supporting her direction by focusing on the coaching and supporting and the plan?

I love the way that you have arranged questions for surveying the staff by the field in which they work. I am curious to see if the responses you get back are varied depending on the position of the person you've asked. You have also inspired me to consider the different roles within the school when asking questions.
